Boldness of Color: Canary Yellow

Yellow: possibly the brightest, cheeriest, warmest color out there. I don't know about you, but it instantly makes me feel like spring. However, with anything that is great, too much of a good thing can be bad. What's the fine line for this color? Take a look at these spaces have yellow perfectly placed!

Artwork: one of the best ways to use a bright color. Simple enough to be easily interchangeable with the next trendy color, but still makes a huge statement while it's up.

Yet again, one of my favorite unexpected uses of color, painted ceilings. I don't see this done often, but I think more people should embrace the boldness. It definitely heightens the space by drawing attention to the underutilized blank canvas above you.

Why not add some bright yellow pillows to mimic a headboard? Perfectly combined with the yellow touches on the night table and lamp shade. The navy combo works so well to contrast the brightness.

I love bold furniture pieces like this yellow table. Brown and yellow go so well together, don't you think? And the accent pillow is perfection!

I love that this space, although completely yellow with the painted wall, doesn't seem TOO bright. This shade of yellow combined with browns and grays seems to have enough warmth and even a rustic feel to it.

I love this design, especially in a hot color. Simple, yet makes a statement!

I couldn't resist putting this in. Have you ever seen the inside of drawers painted like this? I'm OBSESSED! Selecting such a bright color is what makes this look so successful! Add in some yellow towels to match, and you've gone from a plain white vanity to something unexpectedly bold!

As usual, a white interior shines with a bright color thrown in. I love the use of horizontal, otherwise disregarded space as a design opportunity.

The "not so neutral, neutral." Imagine this space without the accents of yellow… Totally neutral! Not bad, but whoever decided to add in these bright touches made the right decision. It adds just enough interest to make this space really unique.

Just like the first chair, such a simple design is so successful with a bright, bold color choice!

Whoa! This one is definitely a yellow overload!

The yellow pillows are great, but what I really love is the fabric on the upholstered headboard and bolster pillow. The little yellow accents in the pattern tie in perfectly. And the light blue is a great choice to go with it!

Love these yellow vases! Change up the size and shape to add in the variety, while keeping the same color and shade for consistency.

Why not dress up an otherwise neutral chair with a little yellow flare? This is such a great idea to place a throw under the cushion and over the back.

Classic accessories are always a great way to get that color in. You can never go wrong with a decorative tray, especially in bold color.

Still my favorite color combo; black, white, grey, and yellow.

Yellow: Love it or Hate it??

Patterned Pieces

I absolutely love a nice bold, attention grabbing piece. What better than a little unexpected pattern to brighten up your space??

The best quality about these chairs is the randomness! And who can resist a nice comfy wingback?

This classic chair lends itself so well to any type of pattern or color. I love how these bright pink beauties stand out against white walls.

Nothing better than velvety, intricate pattern. The front side of the chair is upholstered in a matching plum solid that tones it down a bit.

And my favorite chair of all time! I've been eyeing this Anthropologie chair for years! I love the first one in the Pantone Color of the Year

Architecture as a Composition Piece

A building is more than just a place to call home. It is a work of art. Take a look at some of my favorite architectural works of art.

The grid type construction of this home combined with the material changes is absolutely incredible!

I love the way the spaces are almost framed out. If you're proud of your work, why not put a frame around it? :)

My favorite part of this building is the way the height is accented with a tall vertical column in white. At the same time the horizontal wood planks create balance to bring it down a notch.

The rooflines make this an incredible piece, not to mention great use of materials to set off the different elements.

Another example of framed buildings.

LOVE LOVE LOVE! This building itself is pretty linear, so adding this beautiful tall stair case enclosure really defines the composition in a different way.

Boldness of Color: Tangerine Tango

Let's start off the year with fresh, invigorating color. Pantone has chosen Tangerine Tango as the color of the year for 2012 and I couldn't agree more that this color is really hot right now in interiors and fashion! With the radiance of red and the slight warmth of yellow, this color demands attention.

Even a super simple, all white interior looks alive with just a little touch of Tangerine Tango. I love this type of design because it allows you to constantly change the look of your space with your accessories.

I've always been a huge fan of painted ceilings. There's something so unique about it and not to mention attention grabbing, especially with such an incredible shade of orange.  The tangerine drapery is a great way to pull the color down from the ceiling without being overwhelming.

This is a great example of a "neutral" interior that isn't so neutral. Notice how the strip of tangerine wall above the window perfectly complements the strip of orange on the upholstered chairs? The combination of creams, tans, and whites go so wonderfully with Tangerine Tango!

Instead of a fresh and fun take of Tangerine Tango, I love this warmer look. Matched with rich wood tones and some great accent lighting, this is such a rich, rustic look that would look good in any space.
